The mythology of the American media is that Obama is on the left. That's only half of it, because of his left leaning, he and the Democrats lost the house in 2010. Like Icarus, this theory loses it wings in a full sun. How can a president who ignored unemployment and gave the fat rich banks $3 trillion be left?
At best and under the influence of way too much alcohol Obama is a centrist. So now we have Clinton, Obama and the Third Way occupying and crowding the center. Obama of course is actually closer to the right wing than the arithmetic middle between the Democrats and the moderate Republicans (there is one). The Third Way can be easily defined as non fanatic right leaning people without any ideas. Clinton cared for the poor, the blue collar worker and was a champion of African Americans, Hispanics, etc.
The center it turns out, is a very ambiguous description. It cannot be used as a term since we have no idea where the center lies and who uses it.
