In a speech at the UN, Abbas has listed his preconditions. Building freeze in settlement, lifting the embargo on Gaza and stop the Israeli domination. The last is vague. Typical negotiations between two equal parties start without precondition. Very seldom are preconditions tolerated. Even in kidnapping the negotiations are: we give you the money and you give us the kid.
Abbas relies on the world to sit next to him at the negotiation table. why would he negotiate with Netanyahu for the freeze when all he needs to do is stand up, move slightly away from the table and let the world "negotiate" for him with Israel. After the freeze, Abbas will ask the world to negotiate the opening of Gaza otherwise he goes home.
Abbas' approach does lead to peace.
