Seward Darby in Is Edujobs Dead? In the New Republic says the following:
“Will teachers’ unions agree to institute freezes or cuts to salaries and benefits in order to prevent layoffs—something many have resisted this year? Will states, school districts, and unions also agree to revise, in the long term, the ways teachers are hired, compensated, and fired, hopefully precluding the need for mass layoffs in the future?”
The demonization of the teachers unions is now part of American politics. Teachers, with the backing of their too strong unions, are perceived as the cause of the low level of students’ achievements. That is nothing short of massive liable against hard working individuals. The fact that the anti union movement has succeeded in putting down a whole profession is a reflection of the inability of the media to do a decent job. It is also another brick in the wall the prevents this country from advancing from its backward social organization towards a more advance society.
Extending that to all employees, is Darby suggesting that we all be paid minimum wages with no other benefits just to make easier on the local authorities and private employers to make ends meet? Essentially that is the result of Darby’s view. It implies that we will all live in the middle of the 19th century.
