Yesterday's Elections

Any attempt to read a national political picture out of 3-4 election results is silly. Both in the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey where affected by the personalities involved. In Virginia, a state bordering with my state, the Democratic candidate was inept to the level of severe tooth ache. Creigh Deeds offered no plan of his own and relied on tens if not hundreds of negative TV ads that conveyed just about a single message. Why would anyone expect to win with that approach is known only to Deeds and his equally inept campaign manager.

Obama is bad but he is yet to get to Deeds' level.

The claim that people reject the proposed health care reform is a Republican pipe dream. Polls repeatedly show strong support for reform. Although, there were no polls to quantify the support for a single payer system, one should expect overwhelming support for single payer due to the success of Medicare and the strong animosity people have towards big money companies that end up being the only winners in the huge recession.

Nevertheless, one would expect the some of the shaky and politically wind swept Democrats in congress to vote with their feet running for cover by possibly rejecting health care reform and the attempts to enact laws to slow down global warming.

Meanwhile the poor and the unemployed will stay were they are, Obama will find more ways to enrich the banks and the health insurance companies and the Republican will find ways to blame the Democrats for the recession, Katrina and 9/11.

We are living in great times.
