When young LBJ understood that equal rights for African American the Democrats will have to fight for, he knew that the South is going to turn on the Democratic party. The South, the core of the Republican party, never finished the Civil War. It still wanted to exploit Blacks and to eventually win the Civil War that never ended. Those who believe that Obama, a black man, waves the red cloth in the eyes of the Republican bull(y), ignores recent history. LBJ as mentioned above and Bill Clinton presidency show clearly that the South doesn't accept the victors; for the South the war didn't end.
Lacking the historical and social knowledge about the South vs North, one still may ask: is the US a united collection of states or is two countries, a United Southern States and United Northern very Western States?
How long will the Civil War last? There doesn't seem to be a good answer to this question. Conceptually, however, the answer is clear. Once the South cross from the 19th century to the 21st century the political, cultural and ethically the Civil War will end.
The cultural and ethical war against FDR also never ended. Plantation owners and their supporters will never accept social security payment for all. The money in the trove belongs to the owners; slaves should not get anything the owners did decide on in advance. For the South and South-like social changes FDR instituted are illegitimate. If LBJ starts Medicare and if Clinton and Obama try to extend it, why do we expect such atrocities to be legit in the eyes of 19th century plantation owners?
Westerh states such as Montana and Idaho also have a time gap in their lives. It seems that the genocide of the Indians continues even in the absence of Indians. They need to be armed to their teeth, for them the Federal government is still in control of the east with little impact on the West. There no reason to allow the Eastern government control the West and prevent the Western warriors from going on. Somebody found the second amendment and interpreted to mean that the wars must go on since the Founding Fathers wanted it this way. Great, Turkey, Belgium, Iran and the US continue to deny reality.
All these wars are quite strange. The Union doesn't fight; it grudgingly retreat historically as well. Increasingly There are fewer progressives. The Democrats have moved to the center every decade since the seventies. LBJ was the last progressive. Carter was a nobody. Then Clinton was trying hard to position himself and the party a small distance to the left from the center. Obama is on the fence. One cannot be more left or more right; Obama offends both sides equally.
Naturally the warriors joined with the plantation owners to make up the current Republican party.
