The Howler finds himself disappointed and shocked by inept media and by Liberals. Liberals are a topic by itself that requires a lot of data to expose. Clearly, American Liberals that are called left or progressive, and never liberal, by most of the world but the US, are not really left or progressive. The same way the the US health care system doesn't resemble any such system in the rest of the world, US Liberal are an animal nobody has ever seen anywhere else.
Inept media is a different story altogether. One cannot say that the Washington Post doesn't resemble English, French or Italian news papers. If there is a difference between the NYTimes and Haaretz, they are in the quality of writing. Most experts writing for the NYT are amateurs. Their knowledge in the area they deal with is limited, their analytical skills minor and their arrogance sky high. That isn't the case across the board. The NYT enjoys great experts on the economy, military, books, dining, etc. Health care, education and politics are very weak areas. Most writers in these areas don't belong to the reporting business.
The op-ed pages in the NYT shame a high school paper in weakness. Except for Krugman and Brooks, you don't have to agree with him, and sometimes Kristof, all others are downright terrible. Dowd is a monster monger, Friedman simplistic to no end, Cohen "I lived in Europe," Collins immaterial, etc.
It is my belief that the talent that goes into both editing and writing in journalism is mediocre. There are very few bright people, very few highly motivated to learn enough about the topic they are responsible for.
Reading the Washington Post who used to be a left leaning paper is now right leaning with a mark of nastiness. The writing itself is way worse than the those of the NYT writing.
Objecting to TV personalities makes little sense. TV is not an analytical medium; it's fully and totally an emotional tool. It may have started differently, it may have great news anchors in Jennings and Rather, but currently it is a mushy mess call Williams. Smiling gets audience but otherwise would get you at most a single date in high school. TV, after all, is a badly behaved teenager.
Thus, the Howler actually kicking a dead horse. The papers cannot improve with a complete revolution, which no one contemplates.
